Igbo youths, under the aegis of the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), have condemned the alleged assassination of two young Igbo traders who were trailed to Niger Road in the Sabin Garri area of Kano State and shot dead.
A statement by the President General of the group, Goodluck Ibem, doubted the report in some quarters about the death of the duo and described it as a foul play.
Ibem, however, called for a thorough investigation into the incident and urged the relevant security agencies to apprehend those behind it.
He said: “It is unbelievable that two legitimate businessmen, who did nothing wrong, would be assassinated on the premise that they were informants to the military. What business did men who traveled all the way to Kano to look for their daily bread have with being informants to the military?
“The tale by moonlight story about the assassination of Ifeanyi Elechukwu, aged 41, and Chibuike Emmanuel does not add up at all. We suspect foul play in the death of the two young men in their prime.
“The assassination of the two young men has a political undertone, and we demand an independent and proper investigation to unravel the perpetrators and why they were assassinated.
“Ifeanyi, Chibuike and other Igbo traders have been doing their legitimate businesses in Kano for so many years now, why would the two young men be assassinated just the same time Peter Obi came to Kano for political consultation?
“We call on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba and the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to unravel the killers of the innocent traders. We don’t want a political investigation on this particular matter. The precious lives of two human beings, who have families and loved ones to take care of are involved. A thorough job must be done,” Ibem stated.
