The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he will remain actively involved in the political affairs of Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that he will not allow former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to win the presidential poll.
Wike spoke on Wednesday during his monthly media parley in Abuja, where he also dismissed speculation that his frequent visits to Rivers State were linked to plans to relocate from the FCT.
The former Rivers State governor said his trips were aimed at maintaining contact with his supporters, engaging residents and monitoring political developments in the state.
Wike said he could not remain in Abuja and depend solely on assurances from political associates that all was well in Rivers State, stressing that he needed to personally assess the situation.
“It’s not about relocating, it’s about coming home to relate with the people and talk to them, and also do those things you know how to do very well, not to take chances,” he said.

The minister said the current political period was too important for him to remain passive, particularly as political parties position themselves for the 2027 elections.
“I can tell you my parents are still very much alive. Of course, this is time for politics. You want me to fold my hand for Atiku Abubakar to come and win the election?” Wike said.
Wike maintained that he had no intention of relocating to Rivers State, but would continue to visit the state to engage directly with his supporters and keep abreast of political developments.
His comments come amid increasing political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with Wike having openly backed President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The former governor has also remained a prominent figure in Rivers politics, despite his appointment as FCT minister and the political tensions that have continued to shape the state since the 2023 elections.
