Joshua Akunaesiobike AKA FMFSoke was born Abia State in the early 2000s. He finished his primary education in 2011 and then went on to complete his university degree in engineering in 2017. His passion for music started around the age of 12.
In this interview, FMFSoke shares his music journey, aspirations, and lots more.
What inspired you to pursue music at such a young age?
Despite my parents not supporting my musical dreams, I found time for music even in boarding school. With the support of friends, my passion for the art grew immensely. I started by producing music before eventually venturing into singing.
How did your family react to your decision to pursue music instead of engineering?
My musical journey took my whole family by surprise. Nobody in my family did music, and when I started, it came as a shock to everyone. My father wanted me to pursue engineering, but my heart was set on music. I was confident in my talent and driven by a desire to make money through my passion.
Did you face any challenges in balancing engineering and music?
Yes, there was a constant battle between choosing engineering and music. The struggle is still ongoing with my family, but I hope my success in music will eventually prove me right. I believe in letting my music speak for itself rather than trying to convince anyone.
Was there ever a time you considered giving up on music?
In 2021, I faced a significant challenge that made me stop music for a while. However, my love for the art brought me back to the studio in no time.
What are your dreams and goals for your music career?
I dream of taking my music all over the world. I do not really care who supports me at the beginning, but I am sure the music will do the talking, and everyone will eventually come around to appreciating it. For now, I am satisfied with my community of fans, FMF (For My Family), who are devoted to pushing my brand out of this world.
How would you describe your musical style and influences?
My music revolves around all types of genres, depending on my mood and the situation. I consider myself a very versatile artist who can fit into any genre. I dont want to be boxed in. I am not inspired by any specific artist because I want to maintain originality and avoid copying anyone. I believe being unique is crucial to going far in life.
Can you share the experience of recording your first professional song?
My first professionally recorded song as FMFSoke was “Uppercut.” The recording process with my producer friend was one of the easiest sessions I have had. The support from my friends who were around to cheer me on made it an incredible experience.
What are your plans for your debut project?
My debut project is titled ‘AKUNAESIOBIKE,’ which means Wealth is Confidence and is also my real name. I named the project after myself because its all about me and exudes originality. Each song on the EP means a lot to me. The EP consists of six tracks, including ‘Uppercut,’ ‘Bragado,’ ‘Friday,’ ‘Feelings,’ and a party banger featuring a major act.
How do you envision your future in the music industry?
I believe this project is a good way to show my versatility and will showcase me to the industry. With the ‘AKUNAESIOBIKE’ EP, I intend to put Abia State on the map and continue making music that inspires people and creates a unique wave in the African music space.
Are there any artists you look up to or wish to collaborate with?
I look up to Burna Boys live stage performances and aim to bring the same level of energy and presence. I respect artists like Olamide, Davido, Wizkid, and Don Jazzy for supporting younger talents. I would love to collaborate with Odumodublvck someday, as I have a lot of respect for his art.
Any final thoughts for your fans and the industry?
I am excited about the release of ‘AKUNAESIOBIKE’ EP and what it will mean for my career. I am determined to stay true to my roots and remain consistent in my art, which I believe will differentiate me in this saturated industry. I am ready to make my mark and let my music speak for itself. Thank you to my FMF community for their unwavering support. Together, we will reach great heights.
