From Femi Folaranmi, Yenagoa

Bayelsa State governor, Senator Douye Diri, has revealed how he resisted moves by some political elements to cause rift between him and his predecessor, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson.

In the build-up to the 2023 general election and the November 11 governorship election, there have been rumours of a cold war between the two Bayelsa leaders.

However, on each occasion, the duo have dismissed such reports, insisting that their relationship was intact.

Speaking at a praise night held at the Kings of Glory Chapel, he commended Bayelsans for standing firmly with him before, during and after the November 11 gubernatorial election.

Diri who admitted that he was overwhelmed said that he would continue to appreciate God for his mercies to ensure the election was free and fair devoid of violence.

He singled out former President Goodluck Jonathan and Dickson for praise for their support, stressing that he is desirous to bring everybody together in the state.

According to him, the two leaders have been key in supporting the prosperity administration in the sustenance of peace, security and development of the state in the next four years.

“This victory is not for me and my Deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, but for Bayelsa. On that day, elections were held in three states, but ours is referenced as the freest and fairest.

“It was God who delivered Bayelsa. Let’s continue to praise God. I commend the people of Bayelsa, for standing firmly with us.

“I resisted all moves to bring disunity between myself and my immediate predecessor who brought us into office, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson. My task is to bring our people and leaders together. Our father, Dr. Jonathan was firm and supportive, a man globally honoured. In our election, all key leaders were united behind me – that peace, security and development in Bayelsa must continue”, Diri stated.

The praise night was graced by the Deputy Governor Ewhrudjakpo; the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere; the Chief Judge of the state, Justice (Mrs) Matilda Ayemieye Abrakasa; other top government functionaries and Christian faithful.
