I need space, says Palmer

Palmer

After a sensational debut campaign at Chelsea, their top performer has not missed a step when it comes to his performances in the new era.

Cole Palmer was the clear star of the show under Mauricio Pochettino, pretty much single-handedly helped the Blues qualify for the Conference League this season.

The fact he has not even been included in the squad for that competition is all the clarification anyone needs for how important new manager Enzo Maresca sees him too, with the risk of him being injured too much to take.

Palmer limped away from the recent meeting at Stamford Bridge against Arsenal after starting the game in the first place despite hardly training in the week leading up to it.

This left Joao Felix to sit frustrated on the bench, although it is not hard to work out why the England international is so important to his manager right now. Even now though Palmer is looking to improve his game wherever he can, and has told GQ Magazine that he is working on different things at the moment. He said: “Different types of turns… mainly it’s not even stuff on the ball, like off the ball, trying to find more space.”

Palmer is having to do things off the ball in order to free himself as defences work harder to mark him tighter this season.

The Blues have needed some of their other attackers to step up in big games in order to make up for some admittedly quiet performances from their star man, and this happened at the weekend against Arsenal through Pedro Neto.

The Portugal international scored his first Premier League goal for the club against the Gunners at the weekend, and he took a lot of responsibility when it came to the Blues launching attacks in their well-earned draw against one of the title favourites.
