Nollywood veteran Kunle Afolayan has addressed criticism surrounding his latest work, Anikulapo Series 2: The Ghoul Awakens, stating that his films are crafted for viewers who appreciate intellectual storytelling rather than mainstream appeal.

In a video shared on his Instagram page on 10 February, Afolayan reflected on the immediate reactions from both critics and fans.

The filmmaker emphasised that not all viewers are expected to understand or enjoy his work, noting that his target audience consists of those who value layered narratives and thought-provoking cinema.

“I make films for people who can think,” he said, referencing his earlier projects, Irapada and The Figurine, which also faced initial criticism but later garnered international awards and recognition.

Afolayan compared the premature judgment of Anikulapo season 2 to global series like Game of Thrones, where audiences often wait week by week to fully grasp the story before forming opinions.

He stressed that the series introduces new characters and plotlines, requiring patience to appreciate the deliberate storytelling approach.

The filmmaker shared that feedback from scholars, professors, and deep-thinking viewers has been overwhelmingly positive, affirming his focus on intellectual cinema.

While acknowledging that some viewers may not connect with his vision, Afolayan expressed gratitude to those who do.

Currently streaming on Netflix in over 100 countries, The Ghoul Awakens is also being prepared for release in non-English speaking regions, further expanding its global reach.

Social media users were quick to support the filmmaker. Comments included:

@abikedabiri: “Great stuff! Glad to have been a part of the amazing experience.”

@oyindamolasanni_: “MY MENTOR A king I Stan, Restan and Refuse to Unstan You too sabi no worry .”

@sanusiolatunjiartstudios: “Only deep thinkers can relate. Can’t wait for Season 3. .”

Some viewers also shared confusion about plot developments but expressed excitement for upcoming episodes, highlighting the depth and complexity of the series.
