Former Manchester United and France defender Patrice Evra has announced the death of his mother, Juliette, following her battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

The 45-year-old football legend shared the heartbreaking news in an emotional video posted on social media, where he struggled to hold back tears as he paid tribute to his mother and sang “Avant qu’elle parte” by French hip-hop group Sexion d’Assaut.

Evra then spoke directly to his followers, describing Juliette as his “rock” and urging people who still have their mothers to express their love while they have the opportunity.

“I lost my rock, but I’m trying to stay positive. People ask me every time if I’m always happy,” Evra said.

“And now all the people that have still got their mum, even if death doesn’t stop the love, just tell them you love them every single day, before they leave.”

In the accompanying message, the former defender reflected on the special bond between a mother and her child, describing Juliette as someone who remained his closest friend through difficult moments.

“Even when the whole world is against you, she will always be your best friend.

“A mother’s love is forever, no matter what happens in life. Rest in peace, Maman. You will always be in my heart,” he wrote.

Evra had previously spoken openly about his mother’s health problems and the influence she had on his life. One of the most personal tributes to Juliette has been his decision to occasionally appear in social media videos wearing only one shoe.

The former France international revealed that the gesture was linked to the loss of his mother’s left leg after she was rushed to hospital in 2010.

At the time, Evra was away with the France national team. After obtaining permission from the team manager, he travelled to the hospital, where he was confronted with the devastating reality of his mother’s condition.

“When I arrived in the corridor, everyone was crying. I saw my brother and sister. I said, ‘Wow, this is weird,’” he recalled.

“Then I went to the room. My mum was on the bed and I kissed her. Then I sat next to her. It was only when I pulled off the blanket, that’s when I saw the left leg was missing.”

Evra later explained that the missing shoe in his videos was not a fashion choice but a private tribute to the woman he regarded as his hero.

“Every time I do a video, I just dedicate it to my hero, my mum,” he said.

The former left-back spent several successful years at Manchester United and also represented France before ending his playing career after spells with clubs including Juventus, Marseille and West Ham United. His latest tribute has brought renewed attention to the close relationship he shared with his mother throughout her life.
