Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney has asked the club to re-sign midfielder, Scott McTominay.

He made the call on The Wayne Rooney Show on Thursday.

McTominay, 29, is a graduate of Manchester United’s youth academy and made his senior debut for the club in May 2017.

He went on to make more than 250 appearances for the club, winning the FA Cup and the EFL Cup.

In 2024, McTominay signed for Napoli in a £25.7m transfer and quickly became a revelation at the Italian side with whom he won the Serie A title in his first season.

He also impressed for Scotland, helping his nation qualify for the 2026 World Cup, the first in 28 years.

Rooney said such a player should not have been let go in the first place.

He said, “I couldn’t believe Man United let him go when they did because he obviously works extremely hard.

“And at the time they let him go, he was actually one of the players who you wanted on the pitch every week because you felt like players weren’t working or weren’t giving the best and he was impactful.

“He was playing in a more advanced role and he was scoring important goals.

“When Man United let him go, I was thinking, ‘wow, what’s going on here?’ But you’d love to have him back at Man United now.”
