I can’t stop loving you

I met Eric on a rainy afternoon when the whole world seemed gray. I was standing beneath the roof of a small café, holding a broken umbrella and trying to protect my books from the rain. That was when he appeared beside me. He was tall, kind-looking, and wearing a smile that made the cloudy day feel brighter.

“Are you waiting for the rain to stop?” he asked. I nodded. “Then you may be waiting all day,” he said. “You can share my umbrella.” I smiled and stepped closer to him. That was how it began.

Eric walked me home that afternoon. He carried my books, held the umbrella over my head, and listened while I talked about everything that came to my mind. He laughed at my silly stories and remembered the smallest details about me. Before he left, he looked into my eyes and said, “I feel like I have known you forever. “From that day, Eric became part of my life.

He was the man of my dreams. He made me feel beautiful when I doubted myself. He called me late at night just to hear my voice. He sent me messages in the morning and reminded me to eat when I was busy. When I was sad, he held me close and promised that I would never have to face anything alone. I loved him more than I had ever loved anyone. But love was not always easy.

Sometimes Eric became distant without explaining why. He would ignore my messages and disappear for hours. When I asked him what was wrong, he would say nothing was wrong, even when his silence hurt me. There were moments when his words were sharp and careless. He sometimes made me feel as if my feelings were too much and my questions were a burden. Each time he hurt me, I told myself there had to be a reason.

Maybe he was tired. Maybe he was stressed. Maybe he was carrying pain he did not know how to express. I remembered the gentle Eric who had shared his umbrella with me. I remembered the way he held my hand when I was afraid. I remembered the dreams we had created together.

Those memories made it difficult to let go.

One evening, Eric promised to meet me at the park. I waited for more than an hour while the sun disappeared behind the trees. The flowers moved gently in the wind, and children ran past me laughing with their parents. I kept looking at my phone, hoping to see his name.

He finally arrived after dark. “I’m sorry,” he said, but his voice did not sound sincere. I asked him why he had not called. I told him I had been worried. Instead of comforting me, he became angry.

“You always make everything so difficult,” he said. His words felt like a stone falling into my heart. I wanted to cry, but I refused to let him see my tears. I turned away and looked at the empty path behind us.

“I only wanted you to care,” I whispered. For a moment, he said nothing. Then his expression softened. He reached for my hand and pulled me toward him. “I do care,” he said. “You know I love you.”

And that was the problem. I knew he loved me, or at least I believed he did. I loved him too. Even when he hurt me, my heart still searched for the good in him. Even when I felt forgotten, I remembered all the times he had made me feel important.

I could not stop loving Eric because love does not disappear simply because someone causes pain. My heart did not have a switch I could turn off. It continued beating for him through every argument, every apology, and every lonely night.

But slowly, I began to understand something.

Loving Eric did not mean I had to accept every hurtful thing he did. Loving him did not mean I had to lose myself. I could understand his pain without allowing him to make mine worse. I could forgive him without pretending that his actions did not matter.

One morning, I stood in front of the mirror and looked at myself carefully. I saw the tiredness in my eyes. I saw the person who had spent too much time waiting for someone else to choose her. I realized that I had been loving Eric so deeply that I had forgotten to love myself.

That day, I asked him to meet me at the same café where we had first spoken. He arrived with the familiar smile that once made my heart race.

“I love you,” I told him. “I probably always will. You are the man of my dreams, and you gave me memories I will never forget.” He reached for my hand, but I gently moved away.

“But love cannot be the only thing holding us together,” I continued. “I need respect. I need honesty. I need to feel safe with the person I love. “Eric looked down at the table. For the first time, he did not argue. He listened. “I never wanted to hurt you,” he said.

“I know,” I replied. “But wanting something is not enough. We have to choose better actions.” He was quiet for a long time. Then he promised to change. He promised to communicate, to stop using anger as an excuse, and to understand that my heart was not something he could hurt and repair whenever he wished.

I did not know whether his promises would last. Love had taught me to hope, but pain had taught me to be careful. So I gave him one chance—not because I could not live without him, but because I wanted to see whether he could truly become the man he claimed to be. I still loved Eric. That truth had not changed.

But my love was different now. It was no longer blind. It did not ask me to disappear. It did not make excuses for every wound. It stood beside him while also standing up for me. Eric was still the man of my dreams, but I finally understood that I deserved to be part of my own dream too. I could not stop loving him, even when he hurt me.

But I learned that loving someone should never mean abandoning myself.
