Nigerians seeking the Federal Government’s 2027/2028 Commonwealth Scholarship have been advised to focus on their academic records, study plans and how their chosen programmes can contribute to national development.
The Federal Ministry of Education gave the advice as more than 2,000 applicants take part in the scholarship nomination interviews, which began in Abuja on Monday.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Director overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Folake Olatunji-David, identified three major factors that would guide the selection process.
They include:
1. Strong academic records: Applicants must demonstrate good academic performance and the ability to undertake postgraduate studies.
2. Quality study plans: Candidates should present clear and well-prepared plans explaining their proposed programmes.
3. Contribution to national development: Applicants must show how the knowledge they intend to acquire could help solve problems and support Nigeria’s development.
“Candidates must demonstrate not only outstanding academic records but also how their proposed programmes would translate into practical solutions and contribute to national development,” Olatunji-David said.
She urged applicants to approach the interviews with confidence, discipline and focus.
The interviews are being conducted across the six geopolitical zones by a panel of professors, scholars and retired education directors.
The Director of the Department of Scholarship Awards, Mrs Khadijat Liman, said the ministry received more than 2,000 applications through the Electronic Application System.
She added that 56 Nigerian beneficiaries of the Commonwealth Master’s and PhD scholarships began their studies in the United Kingdom in September 2026.
