First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has called for improved access to land, finance, training, modern technology and markets for rural women as key steps towards strengthening Nigeria’s food security.
In a message marking the 2026 International Day of Rural Women yesterday, she said empowering women in agriculture would boost household incomes, strengthen rural economies and accelerate national development.
Tinubu described rural women as central to agricultural production and food systems, noting that their work sustained families, supported local markets and advanced community development.
“On this International Day of Rural Women 2026, we celebrate the resilience, dedication, and contributions of rural women to agriculture, food security, economic growth, and community development,” she said.

She said this year’s observance was particularly significant because it coincided with the International Year of the Woman Farmer, offering an opportunity to highlight women’s contributions to agriculture and rural economies.
The First Lady urged targeted investment to expand their access to productive resources and economic opportunities.
“When rural women are empowered, families prosper, communities flourish and nations grow stronger,” she said.
The International Day of Rural Women is observed annually on October 15 to recognise their contributions to agriculture, food production and rural livelihoods, while drawing attention to inequalities in access to resources and opportunities.
