How Nigeria can tame insecurity using ICT –Olasege, ICT expert

Ibrahim Olasege is an expert in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) with many years of experience. He believes that Nigeria as a country has yet to maximize the potential in ICT in tackling insecurity ravaging it.

Olasege was a former principal computer and network engineer at Dots ICT Institute of Technology, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In this interview with LUKMAN OLABIYI, Olasege, who is now the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gbolib Enterprise, a firm based in Sango Ota , Ogun State provides insights into how the country can exploit ICT to address issues of cybercrime, corrupt practices, unemployment, economic development, among others.

You’re an ICT expert. Despite many opportunities in ICT, why is it that it is only in the negative area of it that Nigeria youths are picking interest?

I can provide some insights into the perception of ICT in Nigeria, particularly why some youths may be more attracted to negative aspects. Some of the youths do that due to economic factors. Engaging in illegal activities within the ICT sector might seem like a quick way to make money, especially for individuals facing economic challenges. The allure of financial gain can be a significant factor in steering some youths towards negative aspects of ICT. Another factor can be social environment. Peer pressure and societal influences can also contribute to the choices made by youths. If engaging in negative ICT activities is perceived as socially acceptable or even desirable, it can influence the decisions of individuals.

How can Nigeria use ICT to develop its economy?

Nigeria can leverage ICT to foster economic development in various ways. Here are some key strategies: E-Government initiative; Implement e-government solutions to streamline public services, reduce bureaucracy, and enhance transparency. This includes online portals for government services, digital payment systems, and electronic record-keeping.

Secondly, ICT in agriculture, implementing ICT solutions in the agricultural sector to improve farming practices, will increase productivity and enhance supply chain management. And this can be done with the use of mobile apps for farmers, precision agriculture technologies, and market information systems. Thirdly, develop smart city initiatives that leverage ICT to improve urban planning, transportation, energy management, and overall city efficiency. Smart infrastructure can enhance the quality of life for residents and attract investment. digital education and skills developments, E-commerce and digital marketing, healthcare technology, cyber security measures to mention few.  By strategically implementing these initiatives, Nigeria can harness the transformative power of ICT to drive economic development, create employment opportunities, and improve the overall well-being of its citizens.

With the state of security in the country, what role can ICT play?

ICT can play a crucial role in enhancing security measures in Nigeria. Here are several ways in which ICT can contribute to making the country safer: Surveillance and Monitoring, Data Analytics and Intelligence, Emergency Response Systems, Community Policing Platforms, Border Security Solutions, Collaboration and Information Sharing, Digital Forensics, by integrating these ICT-based measures into the overall security framework, Nigeria can enhance its ability to prevent, respond to, and mitigate security challenges, contributing to a safer and more secure environment for its citizens. Collaboration among government agencies, private sectors, and international partners is crucial for the successful implementation of these initiatives.

Is the government doing enough for Nigerians to maximize many benefits in ICT?

The judgment of whether the government is doing enough to maximize the advantages of ICT in the country is subjective and varies, depending on the viewpoint. However, the government’s efforts to harness the potential of ICT for national development include both positive and negative aspects. Here are some positive steps; National ICT Policy, Broadband Infrastructure, E-Government Initiatives, ICT Training and Education, and Support for innovation hubs. Some of the challenges include infrastructure gaps, cyber security concerns, policy implementation and public awareness and adoption.

In conclusion, while the Nigerian government has taken great initiatives to promote ICT, there are still issues that must be addressed. Continuous efforts in infrastructure development, policy execution, and bridging digital gaps are critical to maximizing ICT advantages for all citizens and all sectors of the economy.

With the unemployment rate in Nigeria, how can the government motivate the youths to develop interest in ICT?

Motivating Nigerian youngsters to become interested in ICT needs a holistic strategy that covers a variety of issues, including education, skill development, entrepreneurship, and support networks. Here are some strategies that the government may consider: ICT education and training, industry collaboration, ICT hubs and innovation centres, incentives for ICT companies, recognition and awards and lastly support for ICT start-ups.  By applying these measures, the government may foster an atmosphere that stimulates and supports young people to develop a strong interest in ICT. This, in turn, can help to reduce unemployment by developing a trained and competitive workforce for the digital economy.

What can be done to check the rate of internet fraud in Nigeria?

Addressing the issue of online fraud in Nigeria necessitates a comprehensive and collaborative strategy involving a variety of parties, including the government, law enforcement agencies, financial institutions, the commercial sector, and the public. Here are some ways for detecting and mitigating online fraud: legislation and enforcement, regulation of online platforms, ICT skill development, mobile money and e-payment security and lastly, cyber security measures.

It’s crucial to remember that combating online fraud necessitates a combination of preventative, investigative, and punitive tactics. Continuous effort, adaptation to new threats, and stakeholder participation are required for a sustained and effective response to cybercrime in Nigeria.

In what area of ICT should Nigeria youths develop interest in order to compete globally?

Nigerian youths should position themselves to compete worldwide in the ICT industry by focusing on high-demand, creative, and technologically relevant fields. Here are some prominent sectors in ICT that provide considerable prospects for global competition: Data Science and Analytics, Cyber Security, Cloud Computing, Telecommunication and Networking, Digital Marketing and E-Commerce and software development and programming to mention a few.  Nigerian youths should improve their global competitiveness by combining technical skills with flexibility, continuous learning, and a thorough awareness of industry trends. Furthermore, acquiring practical experience through internships, projects, and real-world applications can help them compete in the global information and communication technology sector.

Are there enough training grounds for the youths in Nigeria?

The availability of training grounds for youths in Nigeria varies by area and sector. While there are organizations and programmes in place to provide training opportunities, issues such as infrastructural limits, budget constraints, and uneven resource distribution can all have an influence on the general accessibility of training grounds.

How can Nigeria position itself to attract foreign investors through ICT?

Bringing international investors to Nigeria through the ICT sector needs a planned and comprehensive strategy that considers all areas of the business climate. Here are some actions that Nigeria might take to attract international investment in the ICT sector: Investment-Friendly Policies, regulatory reforms, cyber security measures, infrastructure development, international collaboration, showcasing success stories and strategic marketing and promotion. By implementing these steps, Nigeria may increase its attraction to international investors in the ICT industry and foster long-term investment and partnership.
