How I got caught up in Obasa’s impeachment plot – Desmond Elliott

Lawmaker and veteran actor Desmond Elliot has opened up about the dramatic events that led to his involvement in the short-lived impeachment plot against Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Speaking on the political saga during an appearance on Channels TV’s ‘Sunrise Daily’, Elliot revealed that his signature on the impeachment notice was the result of cross-country confusion and a misunderstanding regarding where the directive originated.

Elliot explained that the political manoeuvring began while he was out of the country attending a social event, leaving him out of the loop on the fast-moving developments at home.

“I was in South Africa for a wedding when the impeachment of Obasa commenced. I was confused when I returned,” Elliot stated.

“I saw my colleagues signing, and I signed too, thinking the order was from the presidency.”

Believing the move had the backing of the highest office in the country, Elliot joined his fellow lawmakers in moving against the Speaker.

The plot, however, took a swift turn when the presidency intervened to de-escalate the tension in the Lagos Assembly.

According to Elliot, it took a direct call from the President to rectify the situation and restore stability to the house.

“…until the president called us to return the speaker, which we did,” Elliot added.

Following the presidential intervention, the lawmakers reversed the impeachment process, reinstating Speaker Obasa.
