Yomi Akinsooto is a specialist in energy systems with focus on energy efficiency, Measurement & Verification (M&V), and demand-side management. He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Johannesburg.
In this interview, he speaks about his interests in energy transformation.
How did your academic background prepare you for the challenges in the energy industry?
My academic background provided a solid foundation in engineering principles and problem-solving. More importantly, it instilled a discipline for research and analysis, which I apply in my energy audits and project designs. The technical knowledge gained during my postgraduate studies has been invaluable in navigating complex energy systems.
You hold several certifications, including Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and AWS Solutions Architect. How have these certifications enhanced your professional capabilities?
Certifications like CEM and CMVP validate my expertise in energy management and M&V, giving clients confidence in the solutions I offer. Additionally, AWS certifications allow me to leverage cloud technologies for data analysis and energy monitoring. These skills are essential for modern energy solutions that rely on real-time data and scalable platforms.
Beyond your education, what early career experiences shaped your path as an energy expert?
My early roles at the University of Johannesburg’s M&V unit were transformative. I conducted energy audits, analyzed energy data, and gained hands-on experience in measurement and verification. These experiences sharpened my analytical skills and exposed me to industry standards like IPMVP and ISO 50001, which I now apply in all my projects.
You’ve successfully managed energy projects across diverse sectors. What principles guide your approach?
Precision and adaptability are key. Each project begins with a comprehensive energy audit to understand the client’s needs. From there, I tailor solutions that align with their operational goals while adhering to international standards. Collaboration with stakeholders and a commitment to measurable results also guide my approach.
With such a focus on precision, how do you balance innovation with practicality in your projects?
It’s about integrating proven methodologies with cutting-edge technologies. For example, I’ve implemented IoT devices to gather real-time energy data, but the analysis and recommendations are always rooted in established practices. This balance ensures that solutions are both innovative and implementable.
Sustainability is a significant focus of your work. How do you incorporate it into your projects?
Sustainability is central to everything I do. My work often involves integrating renewable energy sources like solar power, optimizing systems for efficiency, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The goal is not just to save energy but to create a lasting environmental impact.
Can you share an example of a project where your solutions made a significant difference?
Certainly. One example is a project for a retail chain where I led the optimization of HVAC systems and lighting. We implemented energy conservation measures that resulted in a 20% reduction in energy consumption, significantly cutting costs and emissions.
How do you ensure compliance with industry standards in your work?
Compliance is non-negotiable. I rely on standards like ISO 50001 for energy management and IPMVP for M&V. Regular training and audits ensure that both my team and I stay updated with evolving standards.
As someone with extensive leadership experience, how do you manage and mentor teams?
Leadership is about fostering a collaborative environment where team members feel empowered to contribute. I prioritize clear communication, mentorship, and continuous skill development to ensure the team performs at its best.
You’ve worked extensively on energy performance certificates (EPCs). Why are they essential in today’s energy landscape?
EPCs are critical for assessing and improving a building’s energy efficiency. They provide a standardized metric that helps organizations identify inefficiencies and track improvements over time, making them a cornerstone for sustainable energy practices.
The energy industry is evolving rapidly. How do you stay ahead of trends and technologies?
Continuous learning is vital. I regularly attend industry conferences, pursue certifications, and follow advancements in AI, IoT, and renewable energy. Staying curious and adaptable is key to thriving in this dynamic field.
What advice would you give to aspiring energy professionals?
Invest in your education and pursue certifications relevant to the field. Gain hands-on experience through internships or junior roles and stay curious about emerging technologies. Most importantly, develop both your technical and interpersonal skills.
How has your work influenced your perspective on global energy challenges?
It’s given me a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of energy systems and the importance of collaboration. Solving global energy challenges requires coordinated efforts between governments, industries, and professionals like us.
What do you see as the future of energy efficiency?
The future lies in smart systems powered by AI, IoT, and blockchain. These technologies will make energy systems more transparent, efficient, and adaptable, helping us transition to a more sustainable energy future.
What’s next for you in your career?
I plan to deepen my expertise in AI-driven energy systems and expand my consultancy to mentor young professionals. I’m also committed to driving more impactful projects that contribute to global sustainability goals.
