Competitive sports or not, we all like to play. However, when it comes to building one’s stamina, learning to develop faith in another team player’s ability, and knowing the potential of one’s body, competitive sports indeed pave the way and thus, occupy a regal space in the world’s arena. Going hand-in-hand with sports is sports journalism.
Just like the game it hopes to capture, sports journalism can be equally sharp, on point, and stimulating. So when Emily Austin found a chance to become a sports journalist, she jumped at it thanks to her own athletic background. And today, she’s one of the leading voices in sports journalism.
Emily is currently studying at Hofstra University and will major in sports journalism by 2023. While she learns the more sophisticated tricks and tips to become a sports journalist, her initiation into the field started long back in her New York home.
She says, “Sports has always been a major part of my family. Our father always encouraged my siblings and me to push our threshold and do so gracefully. We’d watch NFL playoffs at home, even visit live events, and I am quite sure my father did it to develop in us a healthy respect for sports and how they can strengthen and shape a positive mentality.”
Although only 19 and still pursuing her degree in sports journalism, Emily has already interviewed several NBA & NFL players via her Instagram handle @dailyvibes.
Talking about her experience and what drives her, she says, “I love to engage with the players. Their life on the court and outside it is almost always inspiring. Younger players like Mitchell Robinson, with whom I conducted a live chat online during quarantine, helped me and his fans understand him and his interests better.
This constant novelty keeps me hooked. That and the fact that as an athlete, it is one of the best ways to keep in touch with sports.”
Emily has many plans once she majors in sports journalism. She hopes to bring the fans closer to their favorite players by conducting more online interviews.
Using her Instagram handle and whatever digital innovations may happen in the future, Emily wants to create a platform that inspires young athletes to get insights and tips from some of the best sportspersons in the world.
