The world is rapidly moving away from fossil-fuelled vehicles. Cities are suffocating under the weight of emissions, countries are scrambling to meet climate targets and consumers – motivated by cost, convenience or conscience – are turning their eyes to electric and hybrid options.

In this climate of change, Changan has emerged not only as a participant, but as a pioneer in the industry, becoming the first Chinese automaker to mass-produce and sell hybrid vehicles.

At a time when electric vehicles (EVs) were still viewed as experimental, Changan took a deliberate step towards the future. That early investment has matured into a full-scale transformation, placing the company at the centre of the global shift towards sustainable transportation.

From First Mover To Industry Leader

That spirit of innovation soon evolved into the company’s first all-electric offering, the Eado EV, which hit the roads in 2015. Since then, Changan’s trajectory has been guided by more than market opportunity. It has been driven by a vision to create intelligent, low-carbon mobility for a planet in flux.

With China’s dual carbon policy (aiming for carbon peak by 2030 and neutrality by 2060) as a national imperative, Changan has adopted even more aggressive goals: peak by 2027 and full carbon neutrality by 2045. These targets are deeply embedded in the company’s operations, from R&D to manufacturing, and the very design language of its vehicles.

A Multi-Pronged Strategy

Changan’s electrification journey is anchored in two foundational strategies: the “Mission of Shangri-La” and the “Duhbe Plan”.

The first, launched in 2017, set out to create an entire ecosystem of sustainable design and production. It brought together a R&D initiative, strategic industry partnerships, and a commitment to driver enjoyment – a detail that’s often overlooked in the EV space.

The Dubhe plan, introduced a year later, added a layer of intelligence. It shifted the focus to digital ecosystems, autonomous driving, and real-time human-vehicle interaction. The goal wasn’t to make smarter cars for the sake of technology but to enhance the way people experience mobility, transforming every ride into something more seamless and connected.

This strategic duality, green and smart, runs through every part of Changan’s operation. In 2022 alone, the company used nearly 38 million kilowatt hours of green electricity in its manufacturing process, slashing over 32,000 tonnes of emissions. It also posted a 5.1% year-over-year drop in emissions across its vehicle production.

While others view electrification as a concept for the future, Changan is bringing tomorrow’s EV technology to everyone, today.
