Excerpts

Biggest hurdles on the job

Navigating Nigeria’s highly competitive communications industry presents unique challenges. The intense competition for clients and the demanding process of pitching for accounts without financial compensation, especially when you don’t win the business adds to the industry’s complexities are among the major issues. Surviving in this environment often means dealing with budget constraints and educating clients about the value of comprehensive communications strategies, including media training.

Delayed payments and other  irregularities further complicate operations, impacting cash flow and hindering project execution.

The industry also grapples with talent shortages, intensified by the ‘Japa’ syndrome – the trend of skilled professionals seeking opportunities abroad.

Managing project scope, preventing scope creep, and meeting tight deadlines amidst client expectations contribute to the industry’s demanding nature. Striking a balance between work and personal life becomes a challenge, given the industry’s fast-paced environment.

Building and maintaining strong client relationships require consistent communication and a result-oriented mindset, but the master-servant mindset that many clients have can be a hurdle. Cultivating resilience and adaptability becomes paramount in this dynamic and competitive landscape.

Sustaining clients trust amidst current economic headwinds

Of course, the challenging economic landscape has prompted clients to tighten marketing budgets. The industry is transforming. Marketing strategies, channels, tools, and personnel are evolving to become more streamlined, direct, and targeted. This shift enables easier measurement, evaluation, and reporting, providing valuable insights for informed decision-making. The focus is now on efficiency—identifying what works and discarding what doesn’t. However, amidst telling clients’ stories, we often neglect to share our own narratives. There’s a call to showcase and amplify our case studies to illustrate the industry’s prowess.

Also, the global market prioritises exceptional talents, and retaining them is a priority. Losing top-tier professionals to more structured environments poses a risk of entrusting significant projects to inexperienced hands, impacting the quality of output and eroding client trust. The industry must strategically focus on retaining good hands, providing cost-effective yet impactful initiatives, and finding opportunities to deliver additional value beyond standard services. Lastly, adopting a customer-centric approach to marketing strategies, starting with the customer and addressing their pain points, ensures a more meaningful and lasting impact than resource allocation without a clear goal.

Standing out in the communications space in Nigeria

Determination. Doggedness. Drive. My diverse skill set spans technology, digital marketing, writing, graphic design, and communications, enabling me to offer a comprehensive suite of services, a valuable asset in the ever-evolving communications landscape.

From my inaugural role in the industry, I embraced leadership opportunities, gaining early insights and learning from inevitable mistakes. Working across diverse industries, including corporate and non profit sectors, and experiences in client and agency roles has provided a well-rounded perspective on communication strategies across varied contexts.

Networking holds a pivotal role in my professional journey. It is significant in fostering connections with experts from diverse backgrounds—a practice that fuels continuous learning, professional growth, and new opportunities.

Navigating the dynamic communications industry, I rely on a combination of passion, diverse skills, leadership acumen, ongoing learning, an innovative mindset, entrepreneurial spirit, and a proactive approach to tackle communication challenges head-on.

Bridging skills gap in new generation of marketing communications professionals

Professionals must be adept multitaskers, excelling in effective storytelling and crafting compelling content across diverse mediums. The ability to think innovatively and introduce fresh ideas sets the stage for impactful campaigns.

Understanding and appreciating cultural nuances is indispensable, enhancing communication strategies for optimal audience engagement. Proficiency in public relations and crisis communication principles becomes a linchpin for safeguarding the reputations of individuals and organisations.

Given the era of globalisation, staying tuned to international marketing trends and strategies is non-negotiable. This awareness is particularly vital when working on campaigns with global implications, ensuring a nuanced approach that resonates across diverse cultural landscapes.

Improving skills development and retention

Implementing regular training and mentorship initiatives to enhance the skills of our current workforce. Seasoned professionals can guide and mentor junior colleagues, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.

To stay abreast of industry demands, we should collaborate with institutions and professional bodies to shape curriculum content that aligns with current needs. Expanding apprenticeship programs will also empower aspiring professionals to gain practical experience, contributing meaningfully to ongoing projects.

To bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry requirements, we can facilitate more internships, workshops, and guest lectures. These initiatives will provide practical insights and create valuable connections between academia and industry professionals.

Encouraging cross-training within the organisation will nurture well-rounded professionals. By offering opportunities for employees to explore diverse roles and responsibilities, we promote versatility and adaptability within our workforce.

Establishing effective feedback mechanisms to ensure that every employee’s voice is heard. Regular feedback sessions will help us understand and address concerns proactively, fostering a sense of belonging and engagement among our team members.

Lastly, competitive compensation packages will attract and retain top talents. Ensuring our remuneration aligns with industry standards will show value for their contributions.

Future work goals

GROWTH – Going for it. Running with it. Owning it. Working hard on it. Thinking it through with others and Harnessing opportunities.

I am dedicated to personal growth and advancing the marketing and communications community. I aim to broaden my global footprint through partnerships with international clients and collaborators.

Consistently delivering top-tier content, conducting impactful research, and offering insightful perspectives are at the fore. I aspire to contribute to industry publications, participate in conferences, and engage in panel discussions to share valuable insights.

Giving back is a non-negotiable aspect of my journey. I am passionate about mentoring aspiring professionals and guiding them through the industry’s intricacies. I plan to share knowledge with the next generation by contributing to educational initiatives and teaching or developing courses.

Continuing to author books, articles, and thought pieces remains a priority, contributing meaningfully to industry discourse. I aim to be featured prominently in industry publications and be recognised for substantial contributions.

Success, for me, goes beyond financial achievements; it encompasses a positive impact on the industry. I am committed to ongoing learning, maintaining a curious mindset, and adapting to the ever-evolving marketing landscape.

Instilling workplace culture, ethical values in the team

Teamwork is a key attribute. A cohesive team approach where one’s weakness complements another’s strength. We must collaborate like a broomstick in a bunch because success is achieved through collective effort. When we work together, we win together.

Ingenuity – The same pencil that is useless in a potter’s hand is the power of an artist. Clay cannot make ridges, but loam can. Yet you dare not use loam when you need to make pots. Nothing is inherently useless; it’s just a matter of finding the right use.

Effective communication, encompassing both speaking and listening, helps conflict resolution. Quality conversations bring meaningful resolutions to human interactions.

Be responsible and resourceful – every challenge has a solution if we are determined and diligent enough to find it.

Balance hard work with smart work and a commitment to continuous personal learning and development. Uphold the highest standards of integrity and honesty.

Advice for aspiring communications professionals

Initiate, Integrate and Iterate.

Initiate your career by setting the tone from the beginning. Start by building competence, capacity, and character.

Integrate other skills and ideas, and let your communication strategies, messages, and interactions reflect ingenuity. Integrate trust-building into your dealings. Consistently deliver on promises, be reliable, and let your stakeholders feel secure around you.

Iterate your unique selling proposition both personally and professionally. Reflect on experiences, learning from successes and challenges. Adapt your strategies to align better with your trade secret.

When entering a room full of people, shift your focus from wondering if they like you (rooted in fear and insecurity) to evaluating if you like them (reflecting courage and confidence). Choose to assert your presence in the industry, take control of your narrative, showcase your worth, forge your path, and exude strength. With each step, demonstrate that you possess the qualities to become the next big thing.
