The Ondo State Police Command has commenced investigation into a fatal armed robbery incident that claimed the life of one Mr. Clement Idris in the early hours of Friday, July 3, at Shagari Area, Akure.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abayomi Jimoh, a resident of the area, Mr. Oluwatoyin, reported to the police at about 3:30 a.m. that he heard a gunshot around 1:00 a.m. coming from a neighbouring residence.

“On stepping outside, he discovered Mr. Clement Idris lying in a pool of blood,” the statement said.

Preliminary accounts provided by the deceased’s family indicated that a group of armed robbers invaded their residence during the night.

The assailants allegedly dragged the victim outside, attacked him with machetes and subsequently shot him before fleeing the scene.

Concerned neighbours assisted in evacuating the victim to the General Hospital, Akure, where medical personnel confirmed him dead.

Police detectives who visited the crime scene said preliminary examination revealed multiple machete wounds on the head and chest, as well as a gunshot wound around the neck.

Photographs of the deceased were taken as part of the investigation.

During a search of the scene, investigators recovered several exhibits believed to be connected with the crime.

These include one lady’s handbag, one cross bag, one small Itel mobile phone and one expended locally made gun shell.

The police said preliminary findings indicate that the Itel phone and one of the bags belong to occupants of a neighbouring apartment who were earlier robbed of their mobile phones before the suspects proceeded to attack the deceased.

The command said it has arrested one suspect in connection with the incident.

It added that “intensive efforts, leveraging intelligence-led policing, forensic analysis and coordinated tactical operations, are ongoing to apprehend other members of the criminal gang, recover the weapons used during the attack, and ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.”

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Felix Ohagwu, has assured residents that no effort would be spared in bringing those responsible for the crime to justice.

He urged members of the public to remain calm and provide credible information to assist the police in tracking down the fleeing suspects.

The command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and encouraged residents to promptly report suspicious persons or activities through the nearest police station or emergency channels.
