“By bridging the digital divide,” says Dr. Falade Muritala Adesola, Senior Lecturer at Trinity University, “we can equip students in rural areas with the same educational opportunities as their urban counterparts. This will not only improve educational outcomes but also foster a more skilled and competitive workforce.”

“For businesses, lack of access to broadband means they are simply unable to leverage the internet to reach and engage with customers, advertise their products and services, sell online, and improve productivity and efficiency. Any business without internet access in today’s digital world is fighting with one hand tied behind their back. It cannot benefit from the internet, which is an exciting space for innovation, new ideas, and new opportunities. Such businesses often struggle to be innovative and competitive”, Awe explained.
He said, affordable broadband empowers aspiring entrepreneurs like Emeka. “Imagine him launching an online shop, showcasing his talents and products to a national, even global audience. Online training and resources become his tools, equipping him to compete effectively in the digital marketplace. This fosters a wave of small businesses flourishing in rural areas, creating jobs and driving economic growth throughout the nation.
“Affordable broadband is a game-changer for entrepreneurs. It levels the playing field, allowing individuals from all backgrounds to participate in the digital economy and contribute to the nation’s economic development”, said Adesola.
Financial inclusion for all
Broadband access is a key driver of financial empowerment. With affordable internet, Nigerians, especially those in remote areas, can access mobile banking services with ease. Online financial literacy tools and digital payment platforms empower them to manage their finances effectively and participate formally in the economy. This financial inclusion fosters security and paves the way for a more prosperous future for all.
“Financial inclusion is critical for poverty reduction and economic growth. Broadband access will play a vital role in achieving this goal by enabling Nigerians to access financial services and manage their finances more effectively”, says Mr. Akintola Akinyemi, Director of a Research firm in Lagos.
