Nigeria is a nation brimming with diverse potential. From bustling megacities to vibrant rural communities, the country boasts of a young, energetic population eager to connect and contribute. However, a significant barrier stands in the way of this progress: the digital divide. “Limited access to affordable broadband internet hinders Nigerians’ ability to fully participate in the digital economy, stifling innovation and economic growth. You cannot even start or run an online business without internet access. So, without internet access, you are excluded from the benefits of the digital revolution and cannot meaningfully participate and contribute to the digital economy”, said Jide Awe, founder of Jidaw Systems Limited.

According to experts, all hopes are not lost as there is a solution on the horizon: making broadband affordable and accessible for all. This is not just about connecting people to the internet; it is also about unlocking a future brimming with possibilities.

Here is how affordable broadband can bridge the digital gap and propel Nigeria’s economy forward, incorporating insights from experts in the field.

Levelling the educational playing field

According to Awe, “Imagine Amina, a bright student in a rural village, yearning for a quality education. Traditionally, limited resources and a lack of qualified teachers restrict her options. However, with affordable broadband, Amina’s world will transform. Virtual classrooms become a reality, connecting her with top educators across the country. Interactive lessons and engaging materials replace rote learning, fostering a more inclusive and enriching educational experience. This empowers students like Amina to reach their full potential, regardless of location.”

“By bridging the digital divide,” says Dr. Falade Muritala Adesola, Senior Lecturer at Trinity University, “we can equip students in rural areas with the same educational opportunities as their urban counterparts. This will not only improve educational outcomes but also foster a more skilled and competitive workforce.”

Rise in entrepreneurship

“For businesses, lack of access to broadband means they are simply unable to leverage the internet to reach and engage with customers, advertise their products and services, sell online, and improve productivity and efficiency. Any business without internet access in today’s digital world is fighting with one hand tied behind their back. It cannot benefit from the internet, which is an exciting space for innovation, new ideas, and new opportunities. Such businesses often struggle to be innovative and competitive”, Awe explained.

He said, affordable broadband empowers aspiring entrepreneurs like Emeka. “Imagine him launching an online shop, showcasing his talents and products to a national, even global audience. Online training and resources become his tools, equipping him to compete effectively in the digital marketplace. This fosters a wave of small businesses flourishing in rural areas, creating jobs and driving economic growth throughout the nation.

“Affordable broadband is a game-changer for entrepreneurs. It levels the playing field, allowing individuals from all backgrounds to participate in the digital economy and contribute to the nation’s economic development”, said Adesola.

Financial inclusion for all

Broadband access is a key driver of financial empowerment. With affordable internet, Nigerians, especially those in remote areas, can access mobile banking services with ease. Online financial literacy tools and digital payment platforms empower them to manage their finances effectively and participate formally in the economy. This financial inclusion fosters security and paves the way for a more prosperous future for all.

“Financial inclusion is critical for poverty reduction and economic growth. Broadband access will play a vital role in achieving this goal by enabling Nigerians to access financial services and manage their finances more effectively”, says Mr. Akintola Akinyemi, Director of a Research firm in Lagos.

Revolutionizing healthcare

The impact of affordable broadband extends to healthcare. Patients in remote areas can connect with doctors for consultations through telemedicine. This not only improves access to healthcare but also allows for faster diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, online access to medical resources empowers individuals to take charge of their well-being and make informed decisions about their health.

“Telemedicine has the potential to revolutionize healthcare delivery in Nigeria, especially in remote areas. By leveraging affordable broadband, we can improve access to specialists, reduce wait times, and ultimately improve health outcomes for all Nigerians”, says Dr. Ngozi Okonkwo, a leading telemedicine practitioner.

Government at your fingertips

Affordable broadband makes interacting with the government from the comfort of your home not just an imagination but a reality. Nigerians can easily access information online, apply for essential services, and interact with government agencies virtually. This not only improves efficiency and transparency but also reduces the need for physical travel, particularly for those in remote areas.

Collaborative future

Continuing, the experts argued that bridging the digital divide requires a collective effort. Collaboration between the government, telecommunications companies, and civil society organizations is crucial. The government can play a role in creating policies that encourage infrastructure development and promote fair competition within the telecoms sector. Telecom companies can focus on innovative solutions to expand broadband reach and affordability. Civil society organizations can contribute by providing digital literacy training programs, ensuring everyone can reap the benefits of a connected Nigeria.

“By investing in affordable broadband infrastructure, Nigeria can unlock a future brimming with innovation, economic growth, and a more inclusive society. It’s about empowering Amina to become a doctor, Emeka to build his dream business, and all Nigerians to access the opportunities they deserve” explained Awe.

In conclusion, as Nigeria continues to develop its robust telecommunications sector, bridging the digital divide is no longer a dream, but a stepping stone towards a brighter, more connected future for all.
