By Ayodele Lawal

Unchained Vibes Africa and Lakreem Entertainment have teamed up to honour rap veteran, Eedris Abdulkareem at a special colloquium held on Saturday August 13, 2022 at Freedom Park, Lagos.

With the theme ‘Towards 2023: The Role of Artists In Making Our Lives Matter’, the special edition of Freedom Vibes colloquium was the sixth in a series of events geared towards promoting artistes’ freedom of expression and the use of music and artistic expression for civic engagements.

Ayo Ganiu, executive producer, Unchained Vibes Africa, said the colloquium is to sensitize the general public on the role of artists in democracy, and mobilize the artistic community to become more active in civic engagements, while also honouring Eedris Abdulkareem for his contribution towards to the music industry, and using music to fight for the voiceless.

Speaking at the event, the CEO, Kennis Music, Kenny Ogungbe described Eedris as a legend who could be compared to the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti who used his music to fight injustice.

“When Eedris released Nigeria Jagajaga in 2004, some people and the state threw stones at him but he fell in love with the street. When Fela was alive, he was not celebrated; but when he died, a lot of people saw him as a prophet. Eedris Abdulkareem is still alive, so let’s celebrate him now,” he said.
