Miffed by ravaging menace of gully erosion in Oba-Amewu Amamba, Uzuakoli, Bende LGA, Abia state, a Labour Party stalwart, Hon. Iheanyichukwu Ugochukwu a.k.a Prince Ugo has cried out to Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti over the terrible situation of rural agrarian roads in Uzuakoli.
In an interview with Daily Sun, Hon. Ugochukwu said the erosion has destroyed buildings, acres of farmlands, and cutting roads connecting various farm areas with other parts of Uzuakoli village.
On what Son’s and Daughter’s of Amamba Uzuakoli has done to bring the matter to the attention of the government, Hon. Ugochukwu said years back, his community leaders led by the Elder Chilasa Kanu ( Amamba President General) once visited, Deputy Speaker House of Reps Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu (member representing Bend LGA) all the way to Abuja on the matter but up till now no result.
Son’s and Daughters of Amamba community have contributed millions of Naira trying to control the Erosion the little way we can, but the situation overwhelmed us, as the stage Erosion requires government intervention.
“With acres of land and buildings being lost to erosion, I hereby call on Gov Otti to, as a matter of urgency, pay attention to this erosion crisis before we totally lost our community to this problem
“Our government asked us to go and farm, knowing that farming is a way of livelihood, sustaining our community, and eradicating hunger.
“Now erosion have cut off the road, making it difficult for our people to go to farm, even if they manage to divert from the route to farm, during harvest it will be very difficult to bring farm products to town.
“The road in question is a major farm road connecting the 5 rural communities. It also leads to a major rice farm in Uzuakoli. If nothing is done and the road is washed away, the entire community would be cut off from Uzuakoli town.
“I thus appeal to His Excellency Gov Otti to intervene and give us succour,” he appealed.
