Hon. Akinola Abiodun Idowu, Executive Chairman of Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area, on Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day celebration, officially flagged off the inaugural Akindodo Orile-Agege Community Games at the Oyewole Primary School.
During the flag-off ceremony and inspection of sports equipment, Hon. Akinola expressed, “It’s a dream fulfilled for my administration. It has always been my vision to host a mini multi-sports festival.”
He emphasised that sports remain a top priority, aiming to foster closer ties with communities and uncover emerging sports talents in Orile-Agege.
”The programme is designed to engage both youths and the elderly. Athletes from various streets will participate in different sports, and health checks will be conducted for residents every weekend.”
He added, “A key feature is that every participant will be a winner, receiving a cash prize, as he solicited partnerships from corporate bodies and philanthropists within Orile-Agege and its diaspora.”
He noted that his LCDA is working closely with the Lagos Sports Commission, as he stressed that all sports facilities acquired by his administration for sporting events will be used effectively.
We’ve decided that the LCDA will provide technical support and make sports equipment available to all public schools for their annual Inter-House Sports.”
The festival includes Boxing, Basketball, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Handball, Weightlifting, and various Board Games such as Chess, Ludo, Ayo Olopon, Darts, Table Soccer (‘Sangba’), and Snooker. Athletes will also compete in Track & Field events like 100m races, hurdles, High Jump, Javelin, and Shot Put. Additional competitions will feature combat sports, Tug-of-War, and Taekwondo.
