Unveiled in December 2024, Ethereal presented a refined direction for HN Clothings under the creative eye of Chikodinaka Perpetua Chima.
The collection moved away from heavy statement-making silhouettes and instead leaned into controlled elegance, where poise and structure became central to the brand’s message. It was less about grandeur and more about how subtle choices could command attention.
The fabrics carried much of this intent. Chima relied on satin, soft lace panels, and structured crepe, with embellishments kept minimal but purposeful. Colour was equally restrained, with deep jewel tones and classic shades of ivory and blush serving as the backbone. The decision to stay within a polished palette gave the garments a sense of cohesion, even if at times it risked predictability.
A standout example was a scarlet one-shoulder gown with a thigh slit, paired with a white faux-fur stole. The look embodied the collection’s balance between drama and discipline—bold in colour yet measured in its cut. While the gown held its own as a showpiece, the finishing along the bust line could have been sharper to fully match the sophistication it aimed to project. Still, it was a commanding look that revealed Chima’s intent to craft modern glamour with a lighter hand.
Beyond the strongest pieces, some mid-length dresses lacked distinctiveness and blurred into one another, reflecting the brand’s ongoing negotiation between restraint and memorability. The repetition hinted that Chima is still refining her editing process, ensuring each design communicates a distinct point of view.
Ethereal managed to expand HN Clothings’ vocabulary. By avoiding excessive ornamentation and allowing fabrics and tailoring to carry the narrative, Chima showed her commitment to discipline over spectacle. It was a collection that demonstrated both growth and ambition, situating the brand more firmly within conversations of contemporary Nigerian fashion that aim for international recognition.
Verdict: Ethereal marked an assured, if not fully polished, step toward sophistication. Its strongest looks showed how restraint can be just as powerful as grandeur. A solid 7/10 for intent, direction, and evolving precision.
