Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen militia, yesterday, attacked a community in Agatu Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State and killed 13 people.

Daily Sun gathered that the herdsmen also burnt houses and looted properties of the residents as they moved.

A source from the community, who didn’t want to be named for fear of victimisation, told newsmen in Makurdi that: “Yesterday, July 9, 2024, Fulani herdsmen attacked Olegomachi community of Agatu LGA and killed 13 people.”

The Caretaker Chairman of Agatu Council, Barr Phillip Ebenyakwu, confirmed the attack. Ebenyakwu, who spoke on the phone yesterday, said: “Yes, it’s confirmed. There was an attack. It happened yesterday evening. The number they gave me was 10 people killed. They were armed with sophisticated weapons and they were looting, robbing and burning houses. And they killed people. About seven houses were burnt down; they carried so many properties. Animals, including goats and chickens, were also carted away. It has been reported to the police. The DSS is aware, too. I’m making arrangements for security men to visit the place,” he said.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Catherine Anene, said she was yet to get the report from Agatu.
