Herders kill 5 in Benue community, many still missing

Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen militia have killed five villagers in Tse Amen community in Mbapa Council Ward, Gwer West Local Government  (LG), Benue State.

Our correspondent gathered that the incident occurred at the weekend when armed herders attacked the community at night.

A local from the area, who did not want to be named for fear of victimisation, told newsmen on the telephone that five bodies were recovered after the attack, while many others were still missing.

The local said: “The corpses recovered after the attack included three males and two females.”

Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the incident. However, she stated that four persons were killed during the attack, saying, “Four dead bodies were recovered.”

Meanwhile, the state Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has sympathised with the people of Gwer West LGA over the attack which occurred on Saturday night.

Alia reiterated his commitment to the security of lives and property of residents and urged all security heads to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to book.

He also called on indigenes of the state to join forces with the government and security agencies to rid the forests of criminal elements.
