Helmbridge director calls for sound minds, strong character at institution’s 50th anniversary

The Director of Helmbridge Study Centre, Surulere, Lagos, Wilfred Dieke, has called for greater emphasis on holistic education that encompasses academic and professional development, cultural formation, physical fitness, sports, morality, ethics and values.

He made the call at a press conference to commemorate the institution’s 50th anniversary. He stressed that education should not be understood merely as the acquisition of certificates or mastery of technical skills, but as the cultivation of the whole person, including mind, conscience and character.

According to him, the golden jubilee of Helmbridge Study Centre provides an opportunity to reflect on the enduring truth that education must go beyond academic attainment. “For 50 years, Helmbridge has remained steadfast in its commitment to promoting culture, character, academic excellence and leadership development.

“While many educational institutions measure success solely by examination results, Helmbridge has consistently pursued a broader vision, producing men and women of integrity. “Over the past five decades, Helmbridge has nurtured thousands of Nigerians, who have gone on to distinguish themselves in public service, the legal profession, medicine, engineering, business, academia and numerous other fields.

“More importantly, many of our alumni have earned respect not merely because of their professional accomplishments, but because of their integrity, discipline, commitment to excellence and service to society. “It is, therefore, encouraging that institutions such as Helmbridge continue to insist that education must shape both the intellect and the character of the individual.

“This philosophy recognises that leadership is ultimately a moral enterprise. The qualities that sustain national development, including honesty, selflessness, diligence, courage and respect for human dignity, cannot be acquired through textbooks alone. They must be deliberately cultivated.

“The success of many Helmbridge alumni illustrates this point.

Their contributions to nation-building demonstrate that character remains one of the greatest assets any educational institution can impart.

“In every profession, competence commands admiration, but integrity earns trust. And without trust, neither institutions nor nations can flourish,” he stated.
