HarryPass poly students visit INEC, gain insight into Nigeria’s electoral process

Students of Public Administration from HarryPass Polytechnic, Mkar-Gboko, Benue State, visited the Benue State Office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as part of an educational excursion aimed at exposing them to the operations of key public institutions in Nigeria.

The students who were received by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) and members of the Commission’s management team introduced them to INEC’s mandate, structure and responsibilities in the conduct and management of elections across the country.

During the visit, officials from various departments of the Commission delivered presentations on their activities.

The Public Relations Officer of INEC, Peace Ogoli, said the Electoral Party Monitoring (EPM) Department explained its role in monitoring political parties and ensuring compliance with electoral laws, while the Electoral Operations Department provided insights into election management and polling procedures.

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department also briefed the students on the use of technology in voter registration, election administration and data management.

She said: “In addition, the Voter Education and Publicity (VEP) Department highlighted the importance of citizens’ participation in the democratic process and urged eligible students to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).”

She said the students were later taken on a guided tour of the state office, where they interacted with officials and gained practical knowledge of the Commission’s internal operations and activities.

The excursion ended at the registration centre within the INEC office, where the students observed the voter registration process while some eligible students also took advantage of the opportunity to register under the on-going Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

Some of the students expressed excitement on the visit, describing it as highly interactive and educational.
