The harmattan wind is upon us and while some see it as a much-needed respite from the usual blistering sun, many others are seeking ways to manage the biting cold.

No one knows for sure when the harmattan will be over so until it passes, here are tips to manage the weather and the challenges it brings:

Drink enough water

This point cannot be emphasized enough due to the dry air which leads to dehydration. So, staying hydrated is important.

Your eyes should be protected

The eyes should be washed regularly and sunglasses should be worn to protect them from dust particles flying around.

Protect your skin

Aside from the eyes, your skin also needs protection during this season. The use of a moisturizer is advised to prevent the skin from drying out.

Also, the lips should be exfoliated with a wet toothbrush or brown sugar mixed with honey.

Cover your nose and mouth

Keeping the respiratory system protected is vital and this is where wearing a mask or scarf comes in, especially when it is dusty.

A humidifier can also be used to add moisture to the air.

Eating healthy foods

Ensure your diet consists of more fruits and vegetables to get vitamins and take vitamins and supplements if needed.

Avoid smoking

As smoking can worsen things during the harmattan season, health experts have warned that the habit should be avoided altogether.

Be fire-safe and keep your home clean

One of the risks of the dry season is that the conditions can make homes and vegetation more vulnerable to fires. So, it is important to always take precautions to prevent outbreaks.

Additionally, the home should be kept clean as dust accumulation is common during this time. Windows and doors should be sealed to keep dust from getting in.
