Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal: Promoter of social welfare

Lawal

Over the years, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal has been a blessing to women, youths and vulnerable persons in Zamfara State.

Through strategic interventions and tireless engagements across every Local Government Area of the state, she has consistently delivered meaningful support to women, children and underserved communities.

Following the emergence of her husband as the governor of the state in May 2023, she has touched the lives of many vulnerable people across the state, actively leading various community-focused initiatives.

In line with her commitment to expand access to medical care, Hajiya Huriyya has rolled out outreaches, featuring free screenings, consultations and treatment for common illnesses, including malaria, typhoid, hypertension, diabetes, and cholera. Beneficiaries also receive expert referrals and complimentary medications.

Through her Huriyya Dauda Lawal Initiative, a foundation focused on improving healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation in underserved communities, with the support of the Renewed Hope Initiative, she has actively promoted social welfare across the state and mentorship for girls throughout Northern Nigeria.

The office of the First Lady under her watch also carries out major initiatives in humanitarian services. She distributes thousands of Ramadan food packages and clothes to orphans and vulnerable households across the 14 Local Government Areas in the state.

Women living with disability are not left out in her humanitarian and social welfare services as she has offered assistance to many. The First Lady has also done well in education and digital literacy with the commissioning of digital e-learning libraries and championing campaigns to improve girl-child education in disadvantaged areas.

Aside from providing for the needy, she has supported programmes that target maternal and child nutrition, in addition to creating cancer awareness, and distributing hygiene kits to schoolgirls and hijabs to female pilgrims. She is a campaigner against Gender-based violence, leading to the launch of a coalition of women-led organisations to combat Gender-based violence, protect women’s rights, and promote gender equality.

Similarly, she is empowering women and providing aid to victims of terrorism, as well as spearheading routine immunisation advocacy campaigns in Zamfara and dispelling rumours about vaccine safety. She is a strong advocate for breaking historical barriers that prevent girls from excelling in science and education.

Her membership of the Board of Trustees of Baze University, Abuja, is a testimonial to her passion for human capital development.

For her steadfast advocacy for women’s rights, economic empowerment initiatives and social protection programmes that continue to uplift and inspire women across Zamfara State, she is winner of the First Lady of the Year Award 2026.
