Former Manchester City defender, Joleon Lescott has said Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres is not a “top” striker and cannot win the English Premier League title for the North London club.

Lescott, 43, made the assertion in a chat with Sky Bet.

Arsenal signed the 27-year-old Sweden striker from Sporting CP this summer.

Gyokeres has scored three goals in ten matches, as Mikel Arteta’s side sit atop the EPL table with 16 points after seven games, one point ahead of second-place Liverpool.

However, Lescott said Gyokeres is just an ‘okay’ striker who cannot lead Arsenal to end their 22-year EPL title wait.

He said, “I would describe Victor Gyokeres as ‘okay’. If you are going to win the league, your striker can’t be okay; he has to be top.

“I don’t think Mikel Arteta can get Arsenal over the line in the Premier League. But in the Champions League, it’s different.

“With the way he rotates and because of that big gap [before the knockout stages], no one knows what kind of form or fitness teams will be in.

“That suits Arsenal better than having to be consistently good every single week to win the league.”
