The African Continental Governor, World Sustainable Development Goals Organization, H.E. Alh. Yahya Muhammad Guregi has condoled with Nigerians over the death of its Ex- President, Muhammadu Buhari, following the shocking news of his passing away on Sunday, the 13th of July, 2025.
Alh. Yahya who in a condolence message he signed and made available to journalists on Monday, the 14th of July, 2025, described Buhari’s death as shocking stating that his death came at the time he was needed the most.
“As the African Continental Governor of the World Sustainable Development Goals Organization, I extend my deepest condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Nigeria, and all those who were influenced by his leadership. H.E. Buhari dedicated his life to the service of his country, leading Nigeria through challenging times, and striving to improve the lives of all its citizens. His commitment to the advancement of Nigeria’s infrastructure, economy, and overall standing on the global platform will be remembered and celebrated by many.
“Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 until 2023, driving a vision of inclusive governance and sustainable development. His presidency was marked by significant attempts to combat corruption and foster economic development, initiatives that merited both praise and criticism. Nevertheless, his leadership was rooted in a desire to see Nigeria and African nations as a whole thrive.
“As we mourn his passing, we reflect on his contributions to the African continent and the world at large. Buhari was not just a leader; he was a symbol of resilience and determination. He faced numerous challenges during his time in office, including insecurity, economic hardships, and social unrest. Yet, he consistently sought to implement policies aimed at tackling these issues, underscoring the importance of unity and collaboration among African nations in addressing shared challenges.
“In particular, H.E. Buhari was a staunch advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He recognised the pressing need for Africa to address its development challenges collaboratively, focusing on sustainable policies that would create long-term benefits for future generations. Under his leadership, Nigeria made progress in various areas such as education, health, and food security, which are crucial components for achieving the SDGs. According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Nigeria’s ability to meet these goals is paramount for its future development and stability
“Furthermore, Buhari’s administration took proactive steps towards climate change mitigation, understanding that sustainable development goes hand in hand with environmental stewardship. His push for renewable energy sources and policies encouraged investments that would benefit not only Nigeria but surrounding nations as well.
“Talking about regional cooperation, while tenure was often marred with challenges, his commitment to fostering a collaborative atmosphere within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was noteworthy. Buhari’s efforts to strengthen ties between ECOWAS member states have been imperative in working towards a unified response to various crises affecting the region. Such solidarity is essential for regional stability and collective progress
