Gunmen have shot dead three vigilantes keeping night watch over NTV community in Barkin Ladi Local Government, Plateau State, heightening fears of renewed attacks in parts of the state.

The vigilantes were guarding residents and their homes when the attackers struck at about 11 p.m. on Tuesday, killing all three.

The latest attack came barely days after 13 people were killed in separate attacks in Riyom and Mangu LGAs , raising fresh concerns over the safety of residents in vulnerable communities across the state.

National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders, Rwang Tengwong, who confirmed the killings, described the attack as unfortunate and called on security agencies to intensify patrols and adopt proactive measures to protect communities.

“The people cannot continue to live in fear while those volunteering to protect their communities are being killed,” Tengwong said.

He urged security agencies to investigate the incident, identify the perpetrators and ensure that they were brought to justice.

“I also appeal to residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies. The safety of lives and property must remain a collective responsibility,” he added.

A resident, Gabriel Ayuba, who also confirmed the attack, said the vigilantes were keeping watch over the community when the gunmen opened fire on them.

“It is very sad that people who were only protecting the community were attacked and killed,” Ayuba said.
