Gunmen yesterday invaded the All Progressive Congress (APC) secretariat located at Melford Okilo expressway, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.

Investigations revealed that there was supposed to be a meeting to deliberate on the gale of suspensions from some local government areas over the weekend.

The meeting was underway when some gunmen invaded the secretariat and started shooting while attacking anybody in sight. 

However, another group of gunmen was mobilised to the secretariat to dislodge the first group of gunmen leading to a gunfight.

Policemen were eventually deployed to dispel the two groups and they succeeded in arresting one suspect.

The party had been enmeshed in crisis following the controversial suspension of high-profile members of the party.

Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has condemned in strong terms the attack on Journalists who were on official duty covering a press briefing in Yenagoa by suspected thugs.

The union, in a statement signed by the Council Chairman, Comrade Samuel Numonengi, and Secretary, Comrade Ogio Ipigansi described the unfortunate event as callous and barbaric and an attempt to prevent journalists from carrying out their legitimate duties to inform the public.

The union called on security agents to investigate and fish out those involved in the ugly act for their prosecution to serve as a deterrent to others.The Union while sympathising with those injured urged politicians to always play by the rules to avoid this type of scenario.
