Ahead of the November 11 governorship poll in Kogi State, Labor Party (LP), Young Progressive Party (YPP) and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidates Desmond Okeme, Samson Omale and Idoko Kingsley Ilonah have denied ever coming up with a consensus candidate from the East.
The clarification became expedient sequel to recent endorsement rumours of the Accord Party and Social Democratic Party candidates, Usman Oyibe Jibrin, and Muritala Yakubu Ajaka.
The candidates, at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, clarified that while they had initiated a process to explore the possibility of arriving at a consensus candidate, no decision had been reached as of yet.
They stated that they had not endorsed any particular candidate and any news suggesting that they had stepped down for another individual was false.
APGA’s Idoko Kingsley Ilonah emphasised that the election was a crucial opportunity for Kogi State to select a competent and visionary leader.
Ilonah highlighted that although Kogi East may be the largest zone within the state, it cannot afford to settle for a mediocre candidate.
He expressed confidence in the pool of more capable candidates available, stressing that it was important to choose someone who would genuinely serve the interests of the people and lead Kogi State towards progress.
Also, Desmond Okeme, the candidate from the Labor Party (LP), echoed Ilonah’s sentiments, saying they were ongoing plans to come to a consensus.
He underlined that the objective was to ensure that the final candidate possessed the necessary qualities, qualifications, and track record to effectively govern the state.
Okeme affirmed that he, along with the other candidates present, was committed to the people of Kogi State and dedicated to providing them with the best leadership possible.
Similarly, Samson Omale of YPP reiterated the candidates’ united stand. He clarified that while discussions were underway to identify a suitable consensus candidate, the process was still in progress.
Omale highlighted the importance of transparency and inclusivity, asserting that the people’s voices and interests must be at the forefront of the decision-making process.
The candidates collectively expressed unwavering determination to represent their respective parties and constituents in the forthcoming election.
They made it clear that their ultimate goal was to secure victory by putting forth the most competent and capable candidate, one who would genuinely address the needs and aspirations of the people of Kogi State.
