Group tackles Makinde over alleged threat to traditional rulers

A socio-political group, Democracy Watchers, has criticised Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, over what it described as his threat against traditional rulers on account of their political choices, warning that royal fathers should not be treated as “political punching bags.”

The group also demanded that the governor withdraw the remarks and apologise to the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, saying disagreements over politics should not be allowed to undermine respect for the traditional institution.

In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Olumide Yusuf, Democracy Watchers accused Makinde of using language it considered disrespectful to monarchs and elders.

“Traditional rulers are not political punching bags. They represent institutions older than elective offices. A responsible leader should demonstrate respect for traditional institutions rather than resort to intimidation and abusive language,” the group said.

It argued that traditional rulers were not political appointees of the governor and should be free to associate with or express support for political causes of their choice.

“Governor Makinde must also understand that traditional rulers are not his political appointees. They are fathers to all, including members of different political parties, and possess the constitutional rights enjoyed by every Nigerian, including freedom of expression and association,” it said.

The group alleged that some political associates of the governor had previously attacked monarchs whose views differed from theirs, describing such conduct as capable of damaging relations between political authorities and traditional institutions.

It further linked the controversy to political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general election, accusing the governor and his associates of intolerance towards opposing political views.

Democracy Watchers recalled that traditional rulers supported Makinde during his emergence as governor in 2019 and his re-election in 2023, arguing that they should not now be regarded as adversaries because of differences over future political choices.

“Political power is transient, but the traditional institution will outlive every administration,” the statement said.

The group urged monarchs in the state not to be intimidated by political pressure but to continue to defend the interests of their communities.

“We urge all traditional rulers in Oyo State to remain courageous and committed to the welfare of their people. No threat from a temporary occupant of political office should diminish the dignity and enduring importance of our royal institutions,” it said.

It also criticised Makinde’s political activities ahead of 2027 and cautioned against the use of state resources to pursue any presidential ambition.

Quoting a Yoruba expression, the group said: “Atari Ajanaku ki í ṣe eru ọmọde” — the elephant’s head is not a child’s burden — adding that political power should not be regarded as personal property.

“A journey of eight years is coming to an end in May next year. Like the Yoruba say, the office will definitely outlive the officer,” it added.

Democracy Watchers called on Makinde to embrace tolerance and respect for traditional institutions as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
