Governor’s Cup: 10-man Ibeno defeats Ikono

More football drama continued on Monday as the 2023 Akwa Ibom State Governor’s Cup gets hotter. In the first match, Obot Akara edged Onna 1-0 to claim the tabletop for Group B.

Onna LGA finished top of the Eket senatorial district but had a lot of chances that was not converted to equalize. One of the wasted opportunities was a one-on-one against Obot Akara goalkeeper.

The heavily attended match ended 1-0 in favour of Obot Akara who conceded only a goal after 12 matches.

“I am pleased with the players for their commitment, intensity and passion. We had our game plan and we stuck to it for the result.”

Coach Daniel Japheth said he was satisfied with the lone goal and 3 points, however he plans to increase the goal tally as the competition continues

Also, Ukeme Ukpong, Obot Akara team coordinator, felt delighted with the result. According to the grassroots football investor, the victory against Onna proved that Obot Akara’s success was not manipulated at the preliminary stage as speculated.

The game attracted more fans because of the wider publicity it enjoyed as well as the prominent sports icons on both sides.

Onna bench attracted an indigene like Hon. Nse Essien, NFF Board Member and owner of FC One Rocket. Obot Akara is the home town of the longest serving Commissioner of Youth Development and Sports.
