With a Bachelor’s degree in Social Science from the University of Calabar, Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu made his marks in banking, petroleum sector and agriculture before joining politics.
He became a member of the House of Representatives, Senate before he eventually emerged as the Governor of Cross River State.
Within a short time in office, Governor Otu has executed projects that are changing the socio-economic landscape of Cross River State.
With a visionary approach and commitment to making life better for the people, his administration has made giant strides in agriculture, infrastructure renewal, education, health care, and civil service reforms under the People First Agenda, with over 60 percent of targets already delivered.

In less than three years, Governor Otu has remodeled the Governor’s Office, reopened the state library, established the University of Education and Entrepreneurship, and revitalised Carnival Calabar.
His administration has given infrastructure development a boost including road rehabilitation. His engagements with foreign diplomats to attract Foreign Direct Investments and a boost in the Internally Generated Revenue are reviving the economy of the state.
Governor Otu’s administration also launched an ambitious 365-kilometer rail line project, connecting Calabar to Obudu, to enhance transportation and economic integration within the state.
Under his leadership, Cross River State has consolidated its status as a place of peace and stability. He has also shown commitment to the realisation of the Bakassi Deep Seaport, which he described as central to the state’s economic revitalisation.
In recognition of his laudable achievements in office within a short period, The Sun Board of Editors chose him as winner of The Sun Governor of the Year Award for 2025.
