Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has offered to offset the medical bills of victims of the Calabar Gas Station explosion.

He made the offer when he paid an on-the-spot assessment of the site of the explosion at the Fonex Gas Station along Edibe Edibe Road in Calabar South Local Government Area.

Governor Otu described the destruction as shocking and noted that it underscored the need for stricter safety measures.

“I visited the site of the gas explosion at Edibe Edibe in Calabar South, and what I saw was deeply shocking. The level of destruction to lives and property is significant. I have directed free medical treatment for all victims and assured that the government will act swiftly, including considering compensation for affected residents.

“This incident highlights the urgent need for stricter safety measures, especially regarding facilities located within residential areas.

“Concerns about emergency response, including fire service access, will also be addressed and my thoughts are with all those affected. We will stand by you,” he said.

The explosion occurred over the weekend. The victims were evacuated to the  University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
