Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has rewarded three Commonwealth Games medallists from the state with automatic employment, recognising the sacrifices behind their international success. The beneficiaries are weightlifting gold medallist Edidiong Umoafia, silver medallist Ruth Nyong, and judo bronze medallist Enku Ewa Ekuta.
Governor Eno announced the employment package after receiving the Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival Torch at Government House, signalling the state government’s continued interest in rewarding sporting excellence. For Umoafia, the gesture is both recognition and motivation to contribute more to the development of sports in his home state.
“I’m happy with the great news from our Governor Umo Eno. I believe with the governor’s pronouncements, there will be no bureaucracy bottlenecks. I’m motivated to do more and train others too for my State,” Umoafia said.
The Commonwealth champion is already demonstrating that commitment. After his gold-medal success for Nigeria in Glasgow, Umoafia returned to the grassroots, joining the coaching crew of Itu Local Government Area at the last Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival.

His presence was particularly significant as he helped nurture athletes competing for Itu LGA, including fellow weightlifter Ruth Nyong, who went on to win a Commonwealth Games silver medal. It was a striking example of how champions can transfer experience from the international stage to the grassroots.
