Encomiums have been pouring in torrents on GOtv, a subsidiary of MultiChoice, Nigeria’s leading digital terrestrial television (DTT) service provider, for the opportunities it has created for the young people through the Sabiman initiative.
Since 2016, GOtv Nigeria has engaged the services of thousands of young Nigerians as Sabimen to market its GOtv products and services across the country. The Sabimen, on a continuous basis, embark on various field outreaches, door-to-door marketing, and road shows, among other creative endeavours, to educate consumers on the various packages and solutions available to customers.
Some of the beneficiaries of the Sabimen, who commended the GOtv for the initiative, said it had offered them the opportunity to earn a livelihood and gain skills that could be monetized amid Nigeria’s rising cost of living and unemployment problem.
Adeyemi Ismail, a Sabiman in the bustling city of Lagos, while expressing his appreciation for the initiative, said he could not imagine how difficult surviving would have been for him if he had not been engaged as a Sabiman.
His words: “I am always grateful to MultiChoice for giving me the opportunity to work as a Sabiman because it helps me to make money. I love what I do. I have been able to assist GOtv customers in my neighbourhood in whatever challenge they encounter while using their decoders. Many people call me “Engineer” because they know I am good at what I do. I wonder how I would survive if I am not a Sabiman.”
For Ogbonna Nneka, a Sabiman in Warri, being a Sabiman has helped her boost her self-confidence and improve her self-esteem. According to her, she has gained skills she can use to earn income. From multiple sources.
“The training I received as a Sabiman has helped to improve my interpersonal communication skills and I have also learned how to use digital gadgets. Now, I am able to monetize these skills and earn extra income. I am so grateful to GOtv,” Nneka added.
Speaking on the relevance of the Sabiman initiative, the Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice West Africa, John Ugbe, explained that MultiChoice was very conscious of the need to be active contributors to the socioeconomic development of Nigeria by empowering young people willing to work.
“The success of the Sabimen initiative in the past seven years is a testament to the grit displayed by our team and the right attitude to work displayed by our vast network of Sabimen. In this challenging time, we are keen to keep grinding through the storms and emerge stronger.
“We remain committed to enabling authentic storytelling while ensuring that individuals engaged through stages of the production process and distribution are well remunerated for their effort,” Ugbe stated.
