Technology giants Google, Microsoft, and TikTok removed more than 58.9 million harmful pieces of content from their platforms in Nigeria in 2024, according to compliance reports submitted to the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
The reports also revealed that the platforms collectively received 754,629 user complaints, reinstated 420,439 posts after appeals, and deactivated over 13.5 million accounts within the year.

NITDA commended the platforms for their efforts, noting that the actions demonstrate compliance with the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries, a framework jointly issued by NITDA, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to promote online safety and accountability.
“These efforts are commendable, but building a safer digital space requires sustained collaboration and engagement among all stakeholders,” NITDA said in a statement signed by its Director of Corporate Communications, Mrs. Hadiza Umar.
The agency added that it will continue working with tech companies, civil society, and regulators to strengthen protections for users, enhance digital literacy, and build greater trust in Nigeria’s fast-growing online ecosystem.
