Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has called on political leaders and residents to ensure a peaceful transition of power in 2027, urging them to prioritise the state’s collective interests over personal and partisan ambitions.

Governor Yahaya made the appeal while speaking during the International Conference and Symposium commemorating the state’s 30th anniversary.

The governor, whose eight-year tenure will end in 2027, urged political leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, young people and other citizens to approach the coming transition with peace, responsibility and a shared commitment to the state’s future.

“As my administration approaches the end of its 8-year mandate, my paramount concern is that the foundations we have strengthened should endure, and that the progress we have recorded should be consolidated and advanced by those who come after us,” he said.

Yahaya stressed that the future of Gombe State must transcend the ambitions of any individual or political party, calling for continuity in development policies and long-term planning across successive administrations.

He recalled that the generation which struggled for the creation of Gombe State did not allow its differences to overshadow their common purpose, urging current political stakeholders to preserve the same spirit of unity.

The governor said the state’s next phase of development would require sustained investment in human capital, technology, private-sector partnerships and stronger public institutions.

Reflecting on the state’s 30-year journey since its creation on 1 October 1996, Yahaya acknowledged the contributions of successive administrations, noting that Gombe’s development was the cumulative result of leadership, public service and collective sacrifice.

He highlighted his administration’s reported achievements in education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, electricity and workers’ welfare, including the construction and rehabilitation of more than 1,000 kilometres of roads and over 2,000 classrooms.

However, he acknowledged that many challenges remained, saying the state had yet to fulfil all its development aspirations.

Yahaya said the anniversary should serve not only as an opportunity to celebrate past achievements but also to strengthen the foundations for a more prosperous, inclusive and institutionally resilient state.

He urged residents to sustain unity and place the long-term interests of Gombe above narrow political considerations as the state prepares for another electoral cycle in 2027.
