Nollywood actress and ROK Studios boss, Mary Njoku, has questioned the double standard in how men and women are labelled when they benefit from wealthy people.
Njoku challenged the tendency to call women “gold diggers” for enjoying a wealthy man’s generosity, asking what such men are called when they similarly benefit from a rich friend.
“If benefiting from a wealthy person’s generosity makes a woman a gold digger, what exactly do we call the 17 men eating his food, wearing what he bought, enjoying his money and calling themselves his boys?” she asked.
The mother of three argued that people naturally gravitate towards value, regardless of gender, noting that men, women, friends, relatives and employees all seek relationships that improve their lives.
She said the real issue was not people’s attraction to wealth but the different labels attached to the behaviour.
According to Njoku, men who benefit from proximity to wealth are often given respectable descriptions, while women exhibiting similar behaviour are subjected to derogatory labels.
The filmmaker further urged men not to feel threatened by their wives’ success, saying a woman’s achievements should not be treated as competition.
