The World Health Organization has commended the efforts of the Federal Government in enshrining the policy on food security in the country through Genetically Modified Products (GMOs) Programme.
WHO gave the commendation through its representative, Laximkant Chavan, at a two-day stakeholders’ meeting on the implementation strategies for the National Biosecurity Policy and Action Plan held in Abuja over the weekend
Laxaddad Chavan noted that Nigeria was ahead of many countries in this regard, saying “Let me expressly state that WHO will always give the government of Nigeria the needed support to protect her territory against harmful biological agents “.
Speaking earlier, the Director General National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), Dr. Rufus Ebegba, while welcoming participants, stated that the Federal Government had assured full implementation of the national Biosecurity policy and action plan 2022–2026 to protect the country against Biosecurity threats.
“This policy is the first of its kind in Africa and one of the best in the world. I must commend the commitment of NBMA and the stakeholders for all their efforts,” he said.
He further stated that protection of the country was responsibility of every stakeholder present during the development process.
The Head of Biosecurity department Dr. Agha Ukpai Agha, urged all relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies to give the needed support to the full implementation of this policy.
