Global IT outage grounds airlines, banks amid London Stock Exchange disruptions

Major airlines, banks, and the London Stock Exchange are experiencing disruptions following a mass IT outage.

According to reports on Friday, major airlines around the globe including American Airlines, Delta Airlines, and United Airlines are battling communication issues, with ground stops for their aircraft issued.

Similarly, Frontier Airlines, in a statement on Thursday, released a ground stop order, sharing, “Flight operations are currently being impacted by a major Microsoft technical outage.”

Speaking with Business Insider Africa, a spokesperson for Singapore’s Changi Airport said: “Due to a global outage affecting IT systems of many organizations, the check-in process for some airlines at Changi Airport is being managed manually.”

The workplace news and data platform of the  London Stock Exchange Group were not left out as user access was impacted on a global scale.

Revealing their challenges in an update on X, Microsoft said, “Our services are still seeing continuous improvements while we continue to take mitigation actions.”

It is believed that an update released by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike could have caused the issue. However, whether the outage is directly related to Microsoft’s systems remains uncertain.

In its update on Friday morning, the tech giant told CNBC: “CrowdStrike is aware of reports of crashes on Windows hosts related to the Falcon Sensor.”

Shortly after the massive outage, a Reddit forum moderator from the company disclosed that CrowdStrike was investigating the issue.

“We have widespread reports of BSODs on Windows hosts, occurring on multiple sensor versions,” the post reads.
