Mrs. Omavuohrerhe Adanoritsewo is the author of the new book, Bruised Roses, a book that revisits the place of the woman in our contemporary society. The author, a BSc holder in Economics and Statistics from the University of Benin, Benin City, says Bruised Roses “is an African story about two sisters who were born when women were treated as liabilities rather than an asset, not a person to be esteemed, and the place of a woman must be in the kitchen.”

In the fiction,  the father of the girls felt education wasn’t meant for the girl child and refused to send them to school, but, with determination and help from their schoolteacher, they were liberated.

How did she come up with the idea for the book? The author says “it came as a result of the experience of others, seeing what is going on in society and how the girl child is been treated as a liability, and this begins from the home and gradually has crept into society.

“You see a father abandon his wife in the hospital because she gave birth to a girl child. I felt this can be corrected and give the girl child her proper place in the home and society.”

Bruised Roses is a message driven book l, and the author is full of positive hope. “I think it will create the awareness that education is not meant for the boy child alone. The girl child deserves to be educated as well. It will also encourage the girl child to know they are made for more and they can become whom they want to become in life,”  she says.

She is a trained educationist, so how has it helped her in her writing career? She responds: “Education has really helped to improve my writing career, because it has made me gain more knowledge.

“It has also helped to enhance my soft skills, and that is with the help of an educationalist. I have learned subtler but equally important skills that will give room for critical thinking and problem-solving, and each of these skills gave me the experience to prepare and take my writing career to the next level.”

A didactic book is meant to steer the audience to a redemptive direction. For the author of Bruised Roses, “Roses are meant to beautify, but when you bruise your roses, they can no longer serve their purpose. So, nurture your roses so that their beauty can spring forth to beautify your life.” The novel is available on Amazon for now.
