GIFSEP celebrates 10 years of building resilient communities

By Chinyere Anyanwu

The Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening local resilience, improving food systems, and promoting inclusive climate action that leaves no one behind, including persons with disabilities (PWDs).

GIFSEP’s Executive Director, Dr. Michael David, made the disclosure while speaking at the 10th anniversary ceremony of the organisation, which was held in Abuja, recently.

He said what started as a seed of an idea and a vision for a better future has taken deep root. He stated that GIFSEP has been working diligently in close collaboration with communities, schools and partners in promoting environmental sustainability; encouraging renewable energy adoption; improving food systems; influencing effective policy, and championing inclusion.

He also outlined the organisation’s strategic priorities for the coming years, while expressing heartfelt appreciation to partners, donors and community stakeholders who have stood by GIFSEP since inception.

Looking ahead, the celebration also marked the beginning of a new chapter for GIFSEP with the inauguration of the Board of Trustees, a significant step towards strengthening governance and driving the organisation’s next decade of growth. The newly constituted board comprises seasoned professionals and environmental advocates dedicated to advancing climate justice, renewable energy access, and environmental sustainability, a major milestone worth celebrating.

During the event, awards of recognition were presented to the United Nations Development Programme Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (UNDP GEF-SGP), Oxfam and 350Africa, in appreciation of their long-standing partnership and invaluable contributions to GIFSEP’s mission.

The celebration also provided a moment to honour the GIFSEP team whose dedication and passion have been instrumental in transforming ideas into measurable impact across communities in Nigeria. It was a moment of joy and motivation as team members received awards for their outstanding contributions.

“As we look to the future, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our partners and the communities we have worked with over the years. The best is yet to come, as we drive forward our new strategic plan, guided by strengthened governance and inclusion-centred programmes and projects that will shape the next decade of our journey,” Dr. David said.
