Ghana’s capital, Accra, will welcome West Africa’s brightest young basketball talents next month as it hosts the FIBA Africa Zone 3 (FAZ3) U-16 Boys’ and Girls’ Tournament from November 15 to 20, 2026, with the Zone’s General Meeting and Congress following on November 21.
The Ghana Basketball Association (GBBA) is leading the hosting arrangements, bringing together young prospects, team officials, referees and administrators for a week of competition and strategic talks on the growth of the sport.
Games will be staged at the Multipurpose Hall of the Borteyman Sports Complex, with FAZ3 working alongside the FIBA Africa Development Commission and the Competitions Department to ensure smooth organisation.
FAZ3 President, retired Colonel Sam Ahmedu, said: “The event presents Ghana with an opportunity to showcase its capacity to host regional basketball competitions while providing a platform for young male and female players to demonstrate their skills, gain valuable international exposure and strengthen their competitive experience.”
Beyond the court action, the General Meeting and Congress will hold at Barima Apartments and Hotels in Accra on November 21.
“The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for representatives of the relevant basketball federations and stakeholders to deliberate on matters concerning the administration, growth and future direction of basketball within Zone 3,” Ahmedu added.
All eight member federations have been asked to send representatives, in line with previous editions.
They are host Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Niger Republic, Benin Republic, Liberia, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire.
Nigeria’s U-16 boys’ and girls’ teams, along with others, have been formally invited, giving the country’s emerging players an important regional stage.
Teams are expected FC to arrive on November 15, with the technical meeting holding on the morning of November 16. Games run from November 16 to 20, and delegations depart on November 21.
Each team will comprise 12 players, three officials and an accompanying referee, with age eligibility checks and compliance with FIBA’s rules part of the arrangements.
The dual responsibility places Accra at the centre of regional basketball activity, combining youth competition with discussions that could shape the sport’s future across the Zone.
Attention now turns to Ghana’s ability to deliver a memorable championship and a productive Congress, creating lasting value for young athletes, member federations and the wider African basketball community.
