A sports enthusiast and advocate of grassroot sport development, Nurudeen Aina Alowonle, has said that ongoing National Sports Festival tagged Gateway Games 2024, has reinforced Ogun State’s reputation as the hub for sporting excellence in the country.
Alowonle who lauded Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration for putting topnotch facilities in place to host an exceptional sports festival, equally observed that the event has provided a veritable avenue for budding and established athletes to showcase their talents to the world.
The sports enthusiast stated this in an interview with newsmen at the MKO Abiola Int’l Stadium in Abeokuta, at the sidelines of the commencement of track and field event, at the weekend.
He noted that the ongoing national sports festival in the state which has brought together athletes across the nation has been widely celebrated for its flawless organization, world-class facilities, and the spirit of unity it fostered among participants and spectators alike.
While commending Governor Abiodun’s visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to sports development, Alowonle declared that Gateway Games 2024 is a testament to what can be achieved with proper planning, investment, and passion for sports.
“Governor Abiodun has set a new benchmark for future editions of the National Sports Festival. The week-long event being held at various venues across Abeokuta and other parts of Ogun State, featuring over 15 sporting disciplines, has witnessed athletes competing fiercely, with several new national records set in track and field events.
“Beyond the competition, the festival served as a melting pot of cultures, bringing together Nigerians from different states in a celebration of sportsmanship and national pride”, he stated.
Alowonle, however, expressed optimism that the Gateway Games 2024 will leave a lasting legacy in the nation’s sport sector.
“This festival has shown that Nigeria can host world-class sporting events. I hope other states will take a cue from Ogun exemplary and remarkable organization”, he submitted.
