The Decade of Gas Secretariat in collaboration with the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PI-CNG & EV) has highlighted major achievements in Nigeria’s gas sector under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The disclosure was made during a media engagement and capacity-building session held in Kano yestrrday.

The session brought together journalists drawn from television, radio, print and digital platforms to deepen understanding of Nigeria’s gas development agenda and promote informed reporting.

Speaking at the event, the Workstream Lead for Infrastructure and Demand at the Decade of Gas Secretariat, Mr. Taofeek Balogun, said significant progress has been recorded under the present administration.

Balogun disclosed that Nigeria’s proven gas reserves increased from 208.83 trillion cubic feet in 2023 to 215.19 TCF as of January 2026, while average daily production rose from 6.86 to about 7.5 billion cubic feet per day, with domestic supply exceeding 2 BCF/D.

He cited $3.5 billion in committed investments across four major gas projects, 100 per cent completion of the OB3 Gas Pipeline and 95 per cent completion of the AKK Gas Pipeline, as well as N671 billion in public infrastructure funding which has attracted about N1.6 trillion in private investment.

On clean cooking, he said the LPG programme targeting five million households by 2030 has commenced with launches in Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom, distribution of 27,000 cylinders and ongoing regional sensitization campaigns.

In his presentation, the Chief Operating Officer of PI-CNG & EV, Mr. Tosin Coker, said natural gas remains critical to reducing transport costs, improving energy security and supporting cleaner mobility, while assuring the public on CNG safety through certified conversion centres and regulatory compliance.

Coker disclosed that 670 CNG buses have been deployed nationwide, including 285 operating commercially across 13 states, while 302 have been allocated to transport unions, students and government agencies, with hundreds more buses and tricycles on order.

He added that under the National Affordable CNG Transition Programme, participating routes have recorded 15 to 50 per cent fare reduction, while 127 additional refuelling stations are planned across 31 states including the FCT, with Kano leading the North-West with seven operational stations and 17 others under construction.
